What do people expect from you?

When I ‘play’ basketball, anddo something good, everyone seems to get excited and kind of pumped up. It’sfun.

The strange thing is, when someoneelse does the exact same thing, it’s not as exciting.

I’ve been trying to figure out why, and Ithink I’ve got the answer.

People don’texpect great things from me on the basketball court. I’m ok with that. I’m not necessarily a great basketball player.Don’t get me wrong, I love to play, but I’m a 34 year-old Dad of 2 and a halfyear old triplets, who plays basketball 3 times a week for an hour-and-a-half,who spends most of his time during the day sitting behind a board or a computerplaying music and trying to figure out the best way to tell a joke about a manwho got caught stealing tens of thousands of dollars worth of TIDE laundrydetergent from a Target store in Minnesota. (He no longer has a clean record.)

Doing something great on the court, for me, isunexpected. That’s why it stands out.People expect great plays from the younger, more athletic,non-radio-morning-show-DJ-type guys. It’s ok. I have left my best athletic days behind me. My brother is thebest athlete in the family. He got the best athletic genes in the family. (Igot the athletic shorts.)

This is ok for the basketball court. It’s not ok for thespiritual arena. People shouldn’t be surprised when we are spiritual good. We should be doing great things. You want proof? Here: Let your light soshine before men in such a way that they may see your good works andglorify your Father who is in heaven. – Matthew 5:16 (emphasis, mine).

This was Jesus talking. In order for our light to shine, andin order for people to see our good works, we have to produce good works.

I don’t know what that looks like in your life, but I hopeit’s something that you can do today. Maybe it’s raking your neighbor’s yard,or walking their dog, or washing their car…for free…

Feed the needy.

Mentor a kid.

Help out a single mom.

Clean your room.

Do ‘good works’ so much, that it becomes the norm.

"Your job is to stay on top of our Netflix account! Don't fail me in this!" - my wife, upon discovering we still had 'Thor' yesterday, after finishing it Thursday night...

I knew we'd be in trouble last night when I could hear snow hitting the ground...snow isn't supposed to make a sound. Or is it???

The Ponca City High School Girls basketball team lost a FIVE overtime game to Lawton Eisenhower. By the time the game was over, all the girls had graduated and the game had to be finished by girls who were in 3rd grade when the game started.

"Why are you stopping to ask me questions? Just GO!" - my version of Exodus 14:15...

I didn't watch the Grammys, but according to Twitter, Adele won 792 awards last night. Well deserved, well...790 of them anyway...

"Humongous & Passive" is never a phrase I'd like used to describe me...or an Army vehicle.

Today, I ate some soup that was a little cold because I was too impatient to put it in the microwave for a third time...true story.

The Most Ridiculous News Stories of the Week

Two trucks and a car were involved in a crash on the Autobahn near Frankfurt, Germany. One of the trucks spilled its load of sauerkraut, which froze on contact with the road and blocked traffic for hours. The woman driving the car was not seriously hurt, and while no other injuries were reported, the cost of all the damages is estimated at $133,000.

Police were called to a report of a fight between neighbors in Miami. Officers soon discovered drugs and a weapon inside one of the homes. A further search uncovered 10 grenades in a bedroom a pig. The neighborhood was evacuated while the 10 grenades were taken to a lab to test whether or not they were live explosives.

Bacon grenade, obviously.

A New Castle, Indiana, man was arrested after trying to steal from a woman. John Dicken was arrested by police after a woman said he tried to steal her dentures while they were still in her mouth.

Why?

Florida woman awoke to the smell of smoke around 4 AM Monday and found it was coming from her kitchen. When she went to investigate the cause she discovered a stranger attempting to cook something. Police say David Kurlin was attempting to cook frozen foods on the stove without removing them from their plastic packaging. The woman locked herself in her room and called 911.

Oops...and oops...

A British online store has pledged to stop selling baby clothes after the company received complaints from customers. A spokeswoman for the website Kiddicare said the store will no longer be stocking the shirts, which bear the words,"Help, I'm being kidnapped. These are not my parents."

A Super Bowl party with just you, your wife's Grandma, and a couple of buckets full of chicken wings is a pretty good Super Bowl party.

Police in Chile have arrested a man they say stole five tons of ice from a glacier. The man was caught with a huge amount of ice in a refrigerated truck, bound for the capital city, Santiago.

I'll just load this into my truck...

A Washington State Patrol trooper stopped a car on the freeway south of Seattle after seeing the driver speeding at 82 mph and making dangerous lane changes. As he spoke to the driver, he realized the passenger in the car was a plastic skeleton dressed in a hoodie. The driver accepted a citation for speed, unsafe lane change, and carpool lane violations.

At least he's quiet...

Anquin St. Junious' attorney told a judge that his client can hardly walk. He's accused of stabbing someone before he was badly beaten himself. Anquin sat "motionless" in a wheelchair in court, but the judge concluded the defendant wasn't really disabled. The judge knew this because he'd seen surveillance video that showed, while awaiting his court hearing, St. Junious was doing pushups in jail. So instead of releasing him over his supposedly poor medical condition as his attorney had requested, the judge doubled his bond.

If you get beat up, these are the only push-ups you should do.

Police say a man dressed in a clown or jester costume and carrying a shotgun robbed a convenience store in Grand Rapids, Michigan. No injuries were reported during the robbery. The clown fled with cash and hasn't been found.

How did he 'flee' while wearing theses???

Vassar College accidentally sent too many electronic acceptance letters and had to contact students a few hours later, informing them that, unfortunately, they had not been accepted.

Welcome to another edition of the 'Musings'. Let's do this.

Last week, I mapped my first printer to a computer. I can't believe I forgot to tell you that!

I think a good name for a detective team would be "Hanger & Boots". That also happens to be the names of some things in my closet.

One of the worst feelings in the world is jamming a splinter of wood down underneath your fingernail.

The other worst feeling in the world is pulling a splinter of wood out of your finger from under your fingernail.

You can't really call yourself a Christian if you refuse to follow Christ.

I'm planning on playing basketball today at noon...I'm going to try to bring my 'A' game...if I can find it. Last time I saw it was 1995.

Mondays make me feel like Garfield...sometimes...

The Most Ridiculous News Stories of the Week

People are crazy. In Florida, wildlife officers recently found a deadly reptile exhibit inside one man’s apartment. A red-spitting cobra, a puff adder, a uracoan rattlesnake, two false cobras and even a small alligator. Tyler Nolan was living with these creatures until he was caught keeping them without a permit. Nolan was cited for several health and safety violations. All of the animals were in good condition.

Cobra Commander is pleased...

I like chicken nuggets...but I wouldn't eat them every day...for 15 years! CHICKEN nugget fan Stacey Irvine has been warned they are KILLING her! The 17-year-old has eaten practically nothing else since the age of TWO. Horrified doctors learned of the her chronic addiction after she collapsed and was rushed to hospital struggling to breathe. Stacey says she has never touched greens or fruit...she was found to have anemia and swollen veins in her tongue.

Not so happy...

PAY FOR YOUR DONUTS! In Wyoming, a 19-year-old college student accused of swiping a doughnut is going to have to pay for the pastry...in a big way. Zach O'Dell has agreed to pay a $200 fine, $10 in court costs -- and 79 cents to cover the cost of the doughnut. He was accused of eating the treat in Blair's Market and leaving without paying for it. He was charged with shoplifting.

Do nut steal these...

The European Union debuted a new foldable car that was previously just a theoretical design from MIT. The car folds up so three vehicles can fit in a single standard parking spot. The electric automobiles currently have a range of 60 miles, and experts suggest they will be used as temporary rentals that can be returned at kiosks around cities ...

It's basically a motorized stroller...

People in a New York neighborhood said the word “school” has been misspelled as “SHCOOL” for months on the street outside of a high school. Residents said the sign outside of Marta Valle High School on the Lower East Side was painted “SHCOOL X-NG” during the summer, and officials failed to correct it for several months. A Department of Transportation spokesman said the misspelling was the work of a utility provider and the company is responsible for correcting the error.

Sometimes we learn our best lessons from rejections.

It's easy to look good when you're being accepted by everyone...at all times.

Who are you when you've been rejected?

That's really the true test of your character.

James 1:2-4 says, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

Are you being rejected right now? Take joy in it.

The dresser I built for my wife (for Christmas-2011) is now finished. It took WAY longer than I expected...like 1 month longer...but I'm happy with it. I don't know, I think I did pretty well for my first major construction-built-from-scratch-except-for-actually-cutting-down-the-trees-myself project.

My wife's response? "Wow. That's got a lot of drawers."

That's good, right?

Now I just have to figure out how to get it in my house...

A sobering question: If someone imitates you, are they imitating Christ?

If you hear your 2 & 1/2 year old say, "How does THAT happen!?" through the baby monitor, you should probably go assess the situation.

I'm still working on my wife's Christmas present. This is not a repeat from 2011.

Coffee is never underrated. I can't emphasize that enough.

They say fear is an excellent motivator...so is bacon.

So far, I've read 1 book this year. My goal is 20...actually, if you count children's books, I've read 734 books this year...most of them have been Arthur books.

The Most Ridiculous News Stories of the Week

In Ohio, "Guns don't kill people, bullets do" or so the saying goes, but 59-year-old Verlin Alsept was a bit unclear of the concept that you still need that gun: He entered a Family Dollar Store in Dayton and threatened the cashier with a bullet — a single .38 caliber round he pulled from his pocket. The 59-year-old man asked the cashier for all the money in the cash register. Unfazed by the threatening bullet, she declined, and he left the store empty-handed. A nearby private security guard at the Westown Shopping Center — alerted by the cashier — quickly ran the man down as bystanders called police.

Gun? No, just a bullet...

In Woodstock, Georgia, residents have set up a memorial along a highway where Bob the Turkey, the town’s unofficial mascot, lived and died. Bob was hit by a car and killed near the intersection where he lived. Bob was buried near the city limit sign and people have flocked to the area to set up a makeshift memorial with flowers. Some residents want to see the area turned into a park. There are no plans for a park, but a permanent plaque in the shape of a turkey will be erected at the burial site.

In India, a high school teacher, with a monthly salary of around $700, was astounded when a routine online check of his bank account showed a balance of almost $10 billion. Parijat Saha, from the town of Balurghat in West Bengal state, said he had checked his State Bank of India account online last Sunday to confirm reception of a $200 interest payment. "Instead I saw this astronomical amount," he immediately called a friend he knew at the bank to point out what was obviously a major accounting error.

Not a billionaire... :(

Here's a bad family outing. An Illinois mother is accused of bringing her five-year-old son with her on a bank stickup led by her boyfriend. Brandon Stancliff allegedly armed himself with a kitchen knife and grabbed a bandanna for a disguise while Lauri Ruble strapped her son into a car seat before they drove to the bank.

A New Zealand farm lobby group says sheep shearing has the potential to become an Olympic sport. Just don’t count on seeing it at London next summer or Rio in 2016. The “time has come to elevate shearing’s sporting status to the ultimate world stage,” the New Zealand Federated Farmers said in a statement, adding that the world’s top shearers are “athletes who take it to another level.”

Are you already dissatisfied with all the new stuff you got for Christmas? You may suffer from hedonic adaptation. Hedonic adaptation is just a fancy label for what we already know: we get used to things. Psychology has developed a pretty rich understanding of what it is that produces happiness—what is sometimes called life satisfaction or subjective well being.
And for the most part, what produces happiness isn’t stuff. People thrive when they have a network of close relations to others and when they have meaningful work that they find engaging.
Stuff just doesn’t do it.
Most of us get more pleasure out of doing than out of having.

My car's engine started making a weird sound last week, but when I turn up the radio, I can't hear it. Problem solved.

I'm still working on my wife's Christmas gift. This is not a repeat from last week...or...maybe it is...gaaahhhh...

Made my first meatloaf this weekend. It was a banner day.

To 'take up your cross and follow Me' in Luke 9:23 means to follow and never turn back. Back in those days, people didn't return from crucifixion.

When I woke up my son, Crawford, on Sunday to get ready for church, he responded with, "OK." When I woke up Bella, she responded with, "NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, GET OUT! I'M SLEEPING!" I know that feeling.

Here is a mountain of bacon.

OMG! What Did You Say?

“Oh, my God!”

There are plenty of people, including me, who immediately cringe when they hear those words. Christians specifically tense up as they recall the words of the Third Commandment: “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.”

Of course, that’s a much milder infraction of the Commandment than what’s frequently heard on movies and your average sports bar. For whatever reason, God is asked to damn things quite a bit. And some people believe Jesus’ middle name begins with an “H.”

Yeah, a lot of Christians are pretty sensitive about using God’s name in vain. While I fully believe that the thoughtless OMGs thrown about today aren’t right—that God’s and Jesus’ names should be glorified, not used as curses—I think the Third Commandment goes deeper than our flying-off-the-handle exclamations. Jesus did a great job of unpacking the heart behind the “rules.” It wasn’t about following the letter of the law; it was about showing how our hearts our corrupt and we can only do good through the inspiration of God the Holy Spirit. One of my favorite exegetical explanations is in Matthew 5:21-22, where Jesus explains the commandment against killing:

“You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ [a term of contempt] is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.”

That’s pretty serious stuff. What once was an easy checklist of not ending someone’s life suddenly has become a seemingly impossible task not to get ticked off at someone. What it shows is that we need Jesus to forgive our murderous hearts and then allow Him to change them.

So what about this whole using-God’s-name-in-vain business? I believe, just like the commandment against murder, it goes much deeper. Consider these questions. Have you ever told someone you’d pray for them, and didn’t? Have you ever avoided an uncomfortable decision about something by saying, “We should pray about this”? Have you ever prayed differently around your pastor than your best friend? Have you ever talked trash about a politician because you believe their morals don’t line up with God’s? Have you ever placed a political party and their agenda ahead of the agenda laid out by God? Have you ever had “a word” for someone that really was comprised of your own ideas and expectations of that person?

I could answer “yes” to all of these things at some point in my life, and I believe that each scenario uses God’s name in vain.

If a person is said to be “vain,” they are consumed by vanity, which means they are obsessed with their outward appearance. I believe that to use God’s name in vain means to use His name in order to look good. At the macro level, His name has been used to make palatable terrible things like the Crusades, Hitler’s “Final Solution” and other genocide, preemptive war, runaway greed (ever heard of the prosperity gospel?), environmentally destructive practices, political platforms and hate speech. That’s the big stuff.

In more subtle ways, God’s name is used in vain when sports figures plug Him into their postgame remarks after they played dirty. (No, I’m not talking about Tim Tebow.) And when musicians with absolutely horrific and disturbing lyrics and stage shows thank God or even Jesus at awards shows, it’s difficult not to think that it’s in vain. This isn’t a judgmental thing; it’s just that everyone—myself included—injects God into our doings in order to make ourselves look better. That’s vanity. That’s using His name in vain.

I believe that injecting God’s name into curses is very wrong, but injecting His name into our own vanity is perhaps even more wrong. Let’s only attribute to His name what is due: worship, praise and glory. We know those belong to Him. Those have nothing to do with our vanity. For everything else, let’s take ownership of our own actions, all the while privately and earnestly seeking the heart of God for our lives.

In Florida, police said a 2-year-old boy told officers about his wanted father’s hiding spot in the attic. Officers went to the home of Valdet Gjeloshi, who was wanted for violating his probation. The mother of his child told them he was not home. However, she admitted Gjeloshi was in the home when the 2-year-old blurted out that his father was in the attic.

Daddy's in da attic...

The federal Transportation Security Administration is defending its decision to confiscate a frosted cupcake from a Massachusetts woman flying from Las Vegas. The TSA said the cupcake was packed in a jar filled with icing, which is considered a gel under a policy designed to secure travelers from terrorists. Rebecca Hains was barred from taking her cupcake onto a plane last month when a TSA agent said icing in the jar exceeded amounts of gels allowed in carry-on luggage. The TSA says travelers can take cakes, pies and cupcakes through security checkpoints but they might get additional screening. They also said the cupcakes were delicious...probably...

A weapon of mass destruction....of your diet...

In New York, a teacher should do more learning...and less lying...Mona Tello, a teacher at The High School of Graphic Communication Arts in Manhattan, is accused of forging a jury duty notice. The investigation began when the Principal filed a complaint. The principal provided a letter, supposedly from the Superior Court of New Jersey, which contained numerous dates during which Tello was supposed to appear for jury duty. A closer look at the document revealed numerous errors. “Trail” was written instead of “trial,” “sited” for “cited,” and “manger” for “manager,” officials said. The letter also allegedly contained fake telephone and fax numbers.

Guilty...of not having jury duty...

In New Zealand, 8-year-old William MacKenzie was in a boat with family, fishing for blue cod when he pulled up a 9.8 pound crayfish on his fishing line. The colossal crustacean even stunned a man with 30 years of experience in the lobster industry, who said it was the biggest he had heard of. "I don't know if there are any records kept for crayfish sizes, but it'd be close to it."

This wretched creature will now live in my nightmares forever.

In New York City, subway workers want you to rate their rats on a new website aimed at calling attention to rat infestations at area transit stations. Transport Workers Union 100 said it is offering a free unlimited MetroCard transport pass to whoever uploads the best photo or video of the rat hordes onto the website ratfreesubways.com. The site also offers a share your "Rat Tale" section for subway riders to vent about their face to face rodent encounters. The "Rate My Rat" beauty contest ends on Jan. 15.

My girls enjoy building 'EPIC CASTLES'. They're good at it. My son enjoys knocking them down.

This was taken moments before Crawdad destroyed the castle...

Someone asked me this weekend, "So, are you not doing McCoy in the Morning anymore?" My response? "Yes, every day...every single day for the past 9 years...6 am to noon." So yes.

"Having a gun pointed at you sometimes removes all the humor from you." - A police chief friend of mine. True statement.

It makes sense that the OKC Thunder beat the San Antonio Spurs last night. We have the better mascot. Super-powerful, natural weather event vs. shoe accessories.

Crawford and Bella are having tubes put in their ears tomorrow. I don't know if we should tell Bella, she may think this means it's ok for her to stick other things in her ears. It's not.

After weeks of preparation, the people of a town in Germany, have opened a small Catholic church built entirely of snow and ice. The snow church is part of a long-tradition dating back more than 100 years. The structure--nicknamed "God's Igloo"--was made with 49,000 cubic feet of snow. It's roughly 65 feet in length, and even has a tower.

And you think it's cold in your church...

In Norway, an estimated 20 tons of dead herring fish mysteriously washed up on the coast and then disappeared. The fish remains turned up on Norway's northern coast on New Year's Eve, and officials are still looking to explain just how and why they showed up. The massive dead-herring haul vanished just as quickly as it seemed to have appeared. Holst says that coastal tidewaters most likely washed the fish remains back into the North Sea.

I can't believe the story I'm herring...

Many people have murdered The Star Spangled Banner, but an Indiana Senator wants to criminalize deviant versions sung or played at school functions. Senator Vaneta Becker has introduced legislation that would direct state education officials to set "performance standards" for singing and playing the national anthem at any event sponsored by public schools, charters or state universities. Singers and musicians would have to sign a contract agreeing to follow the guidelines and would be fined $25 if their performances weren't deemed "acceptable."

Biologists have discovered a parasite that can turn bees into zombies and may be responsible for a phenomenon known as Colony Collapse Disorder. The parasite, a tiny fly, can cause infected bees to go mad and abandon the hive in an erratic suicidal flight toward bright light. Lead investigator and biology Professor John Hafernik, “It’s the flight of the living dead.”

In Great Britain, a worried walker called police when a 'body' was spotted floating by the shoreline. Police and coastguards raced to the scene but soon realised they weren't dealing with an ordinary call. It was a body all right...but it wasn't human...it was a life-size replica of E.T. It had been stolen from the home of a 76-year-old woman who got it from her daughter who handcrafted it as part of a stage make-up class...

After an amazing* noon hour of basketball (we play every MWF at noon at the Ponca City YMCA, join us!), I was walking out and waving a hearty goodbye to the workers at the front desk. My phone slipped out of my hand, I dropped it, and it hit the floor. It separated into 3 pieces. I put it back together, it still works.

Looks cooler than it is...trust me

Today in Sunday School, we talked about James 3, controlling our tongues. James says if we're able to do that, we can tame our entire bodies...pretty intense stuff.

Maybe we should resolve to watch our mouths this year.

I know that I could definitely tone down the sarcasm...a bit...

Lessons From Kim Jong Il

There are so many great things we've learned from Kim Jong Il, but I believe the most important thing we can learn from this man, it's the importance of nicknames. Here are a few from his family.

Kim Jong Il, looking at sausage (while he was alive)

His father, Kim Il Sung was known as "Eternal President" & "Great Leader".

Kim Jong Il had the nicknames of "Dear Leader", "Great Comrade", "Supreme Commander", and "Father".

The new leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un already has these nicknames; "Young General", "Respected General", "Great Successor", and "Outstanding Leader".

I think Janelle and I need some great nicknames.

The Dynamite Kid & Davey Boy Smith

One Christmas, my brother Jeff got the tag-team of The British Bulldogs for Christmas from my Uncle Bob & Aunt Treva. He got BOTH of them. Can you believe that? I don't remember what I got that year...but I remember going out to the car at my Grandma's house and crying. My parents asked Jeff if he would share and give me ONE of them. He did. My younger brother, Jeff, is a good guy.

I don't remember how old I was when this happened, but I couldn't have been older than 17.

BTW, I have both of them now. So, I win. I guess.

May your Christmas season be filled with joy, rather than faces full of tears & sadness.

Yesterday, my son Crawford was at the doctor's office. In the lobby, he was splitting his time between staring at the fish in the aquarium, and enthusiastically hugging the leg of a random 10-year-old girl telling her"I love you soooooo much."

I told him, "Bro, before you continue to proclaim your unending love and endearment for this girl, maybe you should ask her what her name is."

My kids have a toy dog that they have named 'Yogurt'...I don't know why.

"How the Grinch Stole Christmas" is 45 years old...I love this song from it. (Yeah...that's me.)

Next year, I want a live nativity at my house. I just have to figure out how to get all the people to live on my mantle for a month...

The middle school boys at my church want to start something called "The Umbrella Brigade." I can't wait for it to rain on Sunday sometime...just to see how it works.

James 2:26 will spiritually punch you in the face. "For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead."

It was my first...and last Black Friday shopping experience.

I believe it was the bleak winter of 2005. My lovely wife and I were attempting to bring delight to the the lives of all our family by picking up DVD players...for everyone. That metropolis of mayhem known as Wal-Mart had deals on DVD players for $30 apiece, for that time, this was a great deal. In the pre-dawn hours, we awoke to complete our mission. We had prepared ourselves mentally, physically, and spiritually for the task that was before us. We knew that our objective would be dangerous, possibly deadly, but at this point, it was too late to turn back. We made our decision, and we were going to persevere.

When we arrived at our rendezvous point, at the opening of what they call "Action Alley", we encountered throngs of unwashed masses that apparently had also decided to navigate the madness of Black Friday. Their scarlet, blood-shot eyes told the stories of a thousand lost souls, desperate to fill the dark void in the black, emptiness of their hearts, with some ever-so-slight sliver of meaning on this cold, adrenaline-infused morning of havoc. As I squeezed the hand of my wife, I fought the nearly-overwhelming urge to forcefully flee the premises, but my own desire to flood the eyes and minds of my loved ones with crystal-clear DVD delight was far superior in strength than my weakness of will. I steeled my emotions and quieted the palpitations of my heart as I prepared for the inevitable.

As soon as the clock struck 5 am, out came the knives...

...to cut the plastic sheeting wrapped around the pile of DVD players...

Then we got our DVD players and went home.

In China...the new, hot fashion is...artificial replicas of pregnant women’s abdomens! They look like the belly of a genuine pregnant woman, the imitations have variously been described as having “flesh color” and “human skin texture,” and as “highly comfortable,” by online shop owners. There are currently three types of fake bellies being sold, each of which approximates a different period of pregnancy, corresponding to the second and latter trimesters and the final month.

Lost & found alert...NASA seems to have misplaced some of their stuff. In a report, NASA says that more than 500 pieces of moon rocks, meteorites, comet chunks and other space material were stolen or have been missing since 1970.

Police in Florida are searching for a man who wore a Chewbacca mask when he and a pair of young men were involved in a shooting. West Palm Beach Police responded to a report of a shooting November 30th, and a woman who witnessed the incident said the Chewbacca-masked shooter was driving a car with two men, later identified as Jodeci Window and Mario Johnson. You really wanna find him? Call Boba Fett.

A copper sword stolen two months ago from atop Abraham Lincoln’s tomb in Springfield, Illinois, has been recovered. A 16-year-old boy told investigators the sword came loose when he grabbed it, and it fell to the ground breaking into two pieces. It was returned to the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency during a news conference at Springfield Police headquarters Tuesday. Technically...doesn't that make him the king of Illinois?

Strapping a cruise missile to your car roof isn't normal behavior. If it's just the engine then that's fine. Once a reliable 1967 Chevrolet barely able to top 100mph, the Jet-Impala 67 can now reach speeds of up to 300mph, fires out 30ft flames and leaves massive clouds of smoke in it's wake. The monstrous motor created by Paul Stender, has a 10,000bhp engine. This beast follows hot on the heels of their jet-powered school bus which could reach speeds of over 750mph.

KRAMPUS
As a tool to encourage good behavior in children, Santa serves as the carrot, and Krampus is the stick. Krampus is the evil demon anti-Santa, or maybe his evil twin. Krampus Night is celebrated on December 5th, the eve of St. Nicholas Day in Austria and other parts of Europe. People dress as Krampus and roam the streets looking for someone to beat with a stick.

This was the LEAST terrifying pic I could find...

CHRISTMAS PICKLE
The story goes that when German families decorate the Christmas tree, the last ornament to be hung is the Christmas pickle -usually a blown glass ornament that may have been passed down through generations. It is tucked away in a hard-to-see spot (it is green, after all). The first child who finds the pickle on Christmas morning gets a special gift and good luck all the next year. The trouble with this legend is that people in Germany were unfamiliar with it. Glass tree ornaments were indeed made in Germany, in the shape of fruits and vegetables and other objects. These ornaments became very popular in America when F.W. Woolworth began importing them in the 1880s. An old German legend no doubt helped to sell more glass ornaments!

CHRISTMAS WITH THE COLONEL
The celebration of Christmas in Asia usually involves imported western traditions, but in Japan the holiday places special emphasis on romantic love, so its a day to spend with a sweetheart or spouse. Bakeries sell Christmas cakes as traditional sweetheart treats. And you might have to make reservations to get a table at KFC. Kentucky Fried Chicken let it be known that fried chicken is traditional for the Christmas feast. And so it is - in Japan.

Mari Lwyd, an old midwinter custom in Wales, is a holdover from celebrations before Christmas was introduced. Mari Lwyd means gray mare in English. The tradition involves the arrival of the horse and its party at the door where they sing a song with several introductory verses. Then comes a battle of wits in which the people inside the door and the Mari party outside exchange challenges and insults in rhyme. At the end of the battle, which can be as long as the creativity of the two parties holds out, the Mari party enters with another song. The horse is made of a horses skull attached to a pole. The person operating the horse is concealed by sheets, and sometimes has a contraption to work the horses jaw!

A flying squirrel trapped itself in a Rahway, New Jersey, hospital emergency room. The squirrel got stuck in a 15-by-15-foot room with glass walls in the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital on Tuesday. The squirrel climbed up 8 feet to a light fixture and repeatedly jumped off it into a glass wall to evade firefighters. It took about 10 minutes before firefighters finally threw a blanket over the squirrel and took it to a wooded area near the hospital for release. Officials said this was the second time within two weeks flying squirrels have been found in the emergency room.

Welcome to Monday. These be my musings.

It pains me to say this, but I think I may be too old for the Transformers movies. Seriously...I watched the latest one this weekend and found myself saying over and over, "Well, that just doesn't make sense"...

The story about the lady who pepper-sprayed 30 people on Black Friday during 'competitive' shopping leads me to believe that we may have lost a bit of what the Christmas season is truly about...maybe.

I had a mustache this weekend. It lasted precisely 2 minutes, from the time I left my bathroom, til the time my wife saw me.

R.I.P. mustache...

I did some shopping this weekend. It was exciting! I bought some fence...and a 30 pack of AA batteries...

Watching your 2-year-old son play football with his cousins (who are genuinely playing with him) is one of the coolest things ever.

The Most Ridiculous News Stories of the Week

Sonya Thomas, known as 'The Black Widow' is a 105-pound woman who has gobbled her way to victory in a turkey eating contest. She devoured nearly an entire turkey in ten minutes. She beat six opponents, including a man four times her size. “I left only bone,” she gloated after her win. “I’m so happy.”

Carlos Rafael, a Massachusetts fisherman pulled in an 881-pound tuna this week only to have the federal authorities take it away. Rafael and his crew were using nets to catch bottom-dwellers when they inadvertently snagged the giant tuna. The reason for the seizure was procedural: While Rafael had the appropriate permits, fishermen are only allowed to catch tuna with a rod and reel.

More alleged victims are coming forward in the case of a Florida resident accused of injecting cement, "super glue" and flat-tire repair materials into the backside of a woman in a botched illegal cosmetic surgery procedure. Oneal Ron Morris was arrested and charged with causing bodily injury and practicing healthcare without a license.

Deputies in South Carolina say 28-year-old Shareca Jones used two hollowed-out Bibles to try to smuggle weapons, drugs and a cell phone to a prison inmate. Jones is facing drug and contraband charges. WWJD? Not that...

The newest event that extreme sports lovers will be flocking to? Volcano boarding. It's pretty much exactly what it sounds like—participants ride a board down the side of an active volcano at speeds up to 50 mph. The volcanic rock pebbles make for a bumpy, noisy and dangerous ride. KAITLYN: I don't know. Who is it? Is there someone at the door? Let's go see. Is someone there? Are they going to scare me? Who's at the door? Is someone knocking? Let's go to the door. Have you ever wanted to put your finger to someone else's lips while they're talking and say, "Shhhhhhh"? I have.

My wife, MB, ran a half-marathon this weekend. That's 13.1 miles. I don't even have a half-desire to do that...

Played in a flag football game yesterday with some of the adults from my church. We played against the youth...I won the LVP award.

Yup...

I heard a great duet this weekend. My wife, MB, and my son, Crawford playing piano and singing "O Christmas Tree" (or O Crif-mas Twee as Crawdad calls it) was one of the best things ever...

I recently semi-participated in an in-depth discussion about NERF weapons...

James 2:26 says, "As the body without the soul is dead, so faith without works is dead also." Let's go out this week and LIVE what we say we believe!

I forgot to put the most ridiculous news stories on the blog last weekend. My man Zach noticed. He was angry...so this is for you, Zach, and the other 4 people who read my blog!

If you thought a 25 dollar luggage fee was bad, check this out. British airline passengers were forced to stage a giant whip-round and hand over about 25,000 in cash after being ‘held for ransom’ by their airline. More than 180 were left stranded on their Boeing 757 when cabin crew announced during a refuelling stop that Comtel Air had ‘run out of money’. Passengers were told that the flight would continue only if 25,000 dollars was handed over. Otherwise they and their luggage would be removed from the aircraft.

How dare you charge for peanuts!

In Orlando, Florida, a teenager is facing charges for staging his own kidnapping to extort a ransom from his father. The 17-year-old disappeared from a tennis tournament on Sunday morning. He later called his father claiming his captors were demanding $50,000 for his release. It was fake...and his Dad REFUSED to pay the ransom...so he either KNEW it was fake...or doesn't love his son...

Charles Petraske recently finished the New York City marathon in three hours and 16 minutes. Pretty fast...but sometimes, he's slow...very slow...After the race, he couldn't remember where he'd parked his car ...and couldn't find it for two days.

His brain was replaced with a question mark

A couple from North Carolina, couple is suing AirTran airlines for a recent flight in which they say cockroaches crawled out of the luggage bins and the air vents. What is more disturbing, that there were cockroaches on the plane or that there are now super cockroaches who can handle changes in cabin pressure?

This went down in Pennsylvania, a robbery suspect decided to represent himself in court. He asked one of the victims a simple question, and then got the answer he probably deserved. Philome Cesar is charged with robbing 25 area hotels, convenience stores, and other businesses. He asked victim Daryl Evans to describe what the robber sounded like. "He sounded like you," was the answer...Jury members looked at each other and broke into laughter. Probably not a good sign for the defense...

There you go, Zach...call off the dogs.

Hebrews 11: 1 describes 'faith'. It says, "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

So what does that mean?

It was not raining when Noah built the ark. In fact, it had NEVER rained on Earth, at that point...never. He started building a live-saving boat when no one really needed boats...

Enoch just disappeared. Seriously. The dude walked with God until he WALKED with God...literally. His life was lived with so much faith, that God just took him one day. POOF!

Abraham left everything he had ever known because God told him to go...no hesitation, he just went. He didn't even try to make sure he sold his tent first so he wouldn't be paying 2 tent-mortgages...

Faith looks amazing in our time too.

Faith is leaving your current, comfortable, secure youth-ministry job to go and pastor a dying church with a congregation of 7...

Faith is believing and trusting that God has a plan for your life when you've just been diagnosed with cancer.

Faith is sharing Jesus at school when the majority of the students around you act as if a relationship with God is a form of social disease.

Faith is writing that check to the ministry that you believe in when you're not sure if you have enough money to pay your utilities.

Hebrews 11:6 says, "Without faith, it is impossible to please Him..."

My hat is off and my prayers go out to those of you who are pleasing God with your lives today, may you be a God-pleaser.

Got to carry my wife's stuff out of church yesterday...I love walking around with a coffee mug that says, "I can handle it. I'm a Mom."

Speaking of church, I love singing using the 'screens'. I especially love it when the screens don't change quick enough, and everyone goes from singing loudly to one GIANT incoherent mumble at the same time.

This past week, I've taught my kids to beatbox AND talk like the late, great Randy "Macho Man" Savage. I'm a good Dad.

Oh YEEEEEEEAH!

If you think "overcoming the world" means worldly success, you need to read Hebrews 10: 36-40...

Brown Gravy should be the official state drink of Oklahoma.

A new survey says 33% of adults have broken up with a boyfriend or girlfriend via text message, email, or Facebook...apparently there are no apps that give you a spine.

A friend of mine had a meth lab in his neighborhood explode over the weekend...Hallmark does NOT make a card for that occasion...

We May Never Know

"Please pray for my daughter, she's in a facility right now. We found out that she was abused by a youth minister..."

This world is broken. When Adam & Eve sinned, Sin affected and infected EVERYTHING in the world. There is a touch of the Darkness on everything.

Humans have free will. This gift is both a blessing and a curse. We can choose to follow God and dedicate our lives to spreading the Gospel of Jesus...or...we can choose to serve ourselves, and our selfish-often sinful-desires.

I don't fully understand why God would allow the weak to be continually attacked. Some of my friends who do not believe in God say that this is the very reason they cannot allow themselves to believe.

I'm afraid there is not an easy answer.

This world is broken.

God can heal it. We must have faith that he will.

Jesus says in John 16:33, "Here on this Earth, you will have many trials and sorrows, but take heart, because I have overcome the world."

The Overcomer lives within us. Come what may, the Spirit of God, the Jesus that overcame death itself dwells within us. He becomes part of who we are...no...we become part of who He is.

The One who overcomes the Darkness.

Please, Jesus, help us to overcome.

Walked into our living room...saw this...slowly backed out of the room...

Oh, hello.

About 2 and half hours BEFORE the big earthquake hit, my children requested to hear "Earthquake" by Family Force 5...that's only slightly disturbing...

We had a deacon ordination service at my church last night. My favorite part was the "Feats of Strength".

I find it odd that we think we still have the ability to speak clearly...while brushing our teeth.

Sometimes, using words like "henceforth", is necessary.

Never underestimate the power of bacon.

Never leave a week's worth of gym clothes in the trunk of your car and then attempt to put groceries back there...trust me.

Police in Yeadon, Pennsylvania, arrested a group of armed robbers for stealing a 13-year-old’s meatball sub. Police said the teenager was walking home from the deli with his sandwich Saturday evening when Rashawn Mallory, 21, and Ernest Barnett, 22, exited a black Ford Expedition, brandished a black revolver and ordered the victim not to move. Police said the two men searched the boy and left with his sandwich when they found nothing of value. However, they left the teen’s cellphone, which he used to call police. Police located the vehicle, where the sandwich was found still in the wrapper. Mallory and Barnett were charged with robbery, theft, receiving stolen property, recklessly endangering another person and assault. Two other men in the vehicle were charged with criminal conspiracy to commit robbery theft and receiving stolen property.

Authorities in California are searching for bandits who took 20 boxes of frozen pigs’ feet from a train during an emergency stop. Union Pacific Railroad police said the train made an emergency stop in Victorville for undisclosed reasons and thieves broke into a rail car and took the 20 boxes of frozen pigs’ feet.

Emergency services personnel in the small town of Ed, Sweden, said they were surprised when they received a call Saturday night from two girls asking for help getting out of a shopping cart. The teens said were in a remote area of town when they spotted the shopping cart and decided to climb inside. Unfortunately, they soon discovered that they were wedged in so tight they couldn't get enough leverage to get out. They were stuck in the cart for about an hour before help arrived. Police say they were sitting next to each other down in the cart, one in the front and one in the back.

Ever wished your morning cup of coffee tasted a bit meatier? Consider joining the military. An Army laboratory in Natick, Mass., is infusing beef jerky with a coffee cup's worth of caffeine to give soldiers a jolt with their protein. The snack, which looks like a Slim Jim, is part of new initiative to make portable meals more appealing and nutritious. This makes me want to join the Army...

A pair of Domino's Pizza managers in Lake City, Florida, have been charged with burning down a rival Papa John's Pizza restaurant. Police arrested one manager, Sean Everett Davidson, on Thursday, and say he confessed to the arson attack. A day later, cops nabbed Bryan David Sullivan and charged him as well.

In Florida, officials found (and murdered) a 16 ft. python that apparently had eaten a full-grown adult deer. I had an apple for lunch.

Honda said Joe LoCicero, a 53-year-old auto technician, is the first documented Honda owner to have nursed one of the Japanese automaker’s vehicles more than 1 million miles. He was greeted Sunday at Saco City Hall with a surprise parade and a 2012 Honda Accord. “If you listen carefully, she’s getting old,” LoCicero said of his blue 1990 model, which he bought in 1996 when it had 74,000 miles. He calls his Accord “True Blue.” “But it’s been an amazing ride”.

A 60-year-old New York man suing a music competition for age discrimination claims the 88-year-old judge assigned to his case is “unable to function.” Martin Stoner, a violinist suing the non-profit Young Concert Artists for only allowing musicians less than one-third his age, said he admits trying to get U.S. District Judge Robert Patterson, 88, off his case may seem hypocritical, but the judge is “slow-witted and unable to function.” “Judge Patterson could barely see unless he put his face almost on top of a document,” Stoner wrote in his judicial complaint. “Judge Patterson should be removed from the bench, both because of his mental and physical limitations,” Stoner wrote. “With all due respect, he may have been a very learned jurist in his day.”

Georgia police are hunting for a Taco Bell customer who threw a Molotov cocktail at the restaurant's drive-thru window after phoning in a complaint that there was not enough meat in the chalupas he had purchased. The bizarre incident occurred around 5am Sunday in Albany, Georgia. The small blaze did not cause injuries or damage to the building.

An apartment-dweller in Toronto found a 3-foot-long python coiled up inside his toilet bowl. Ramdat Punwassie called authorities after discovering the snake Tuesday night. “I didn’t want to take chances, I close the door and call for help.” Two police officers removed the python and turned it over to the city’s animal services department. It will be turned over to a reptile zoo if the owners can’t be located.

My wife, Marybeth, ran 9 miles on Saturday. She's training for the Route 66 Half-Marathon...I followed her on a bicycle. I carried some of her stuff...like a pack mule...on a bicycle.

"Laughter is the best medicine," said the clown, moments before he died of tuberculosis.

Apparently, calling someone a "bag of tears" is insulting...

When you tell your two-year-old, "I love you," and she replies with, "Yeah, I know," it makes you feel like you've done something right as a parent...

We hear thousands of messages every day. How careful are you with who you let deliver them to you?

Sometimes, pizza sauce can be both eaten AND worn.

I saw a news article completely dedicated to finding out what's wrong with someone's teeth. Way to go, society.

The Most Relaxing Song Ever?

A group of scientists and a band from Great Britain, Boffins, have come up with what they say is the most relaxing song ever.

Boffins say the eight minute track, called Weightless, is so effective at inducing sleep it should not be listened to while driving. Carefully arranged harmonies, rhythms and bass lines help to slow the heart rate, reduce blood pressure and lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol. It contains a sustaining rhythm that starts at 60 beats per minute and gradually slows to around 50. While listening, your heart rate gradually comes to match that beat.

I tried longboarding this weekend. It was pretty fun, but I doubt I'll start this as a new hobby. I enjoy non-broken bones too much.

The future of me...longboarding.

If I were a rapper, I would find some way to fit in the line, "My flow's sick, like it's got spinal meningitis, I command this beat like I'm King Leonidas." All I need is someone to make me a phat beat.

Janelle told me that in Africa, they eat a soup called, "Walky-Talky Soup." It's a broth that contains chicken beaks and chicken feet. It has the amazing ability to make me want to vomit upon hearing about it.

Netflix was created so that I could watch The Mentalist.

Janelle brought me a gift from Africa. I can't wait to use it!

Ahhhhhh yeeeeeaahh...

There should be an alarm that goes off every time someone leaves the restroom without washing their hands. It would sound off "UNCLEAN! UNCLEAN!" Thanks Don Burns.

It's not unusual for teenagers to get speeding tickets...it happens...but not usually like this! A 16-year-old in Detroit was doing 123 mph on I-94, where the speed limit is 70. He had just gotten his driver’s license just two months ago. The boy was behind the wheel of a 2011 BMW. His parents were contacted but the speedy teen wasn’t arrested.

70 mph is not fast enough...

You can have your very own cop car. In Greenwood, Indiana, officials expect to auction off 17 surplus vehicles. Most are old police cars. More than 70 traffic lights will also be sold. They’ve been replaced by more energy-efficient models.

Maybe it's time for a nap instead of a burglary...Florida police said a man accused of burglarizing several cars was arrested after the owner of one of the vehicles drove it away with him sleeping in the back. Miami Beach police said Joe German, 19, stole property from several vehicles in a valet parking garage at a resort before falling asleep in the back of a white Infinity.

Popping vitamins may do more harm than good, according to a new study that adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting some supplements may have health risks. Multivitamins, used regularly by an estimated 234 million U.S. adults, was associated with a 2.4% increased risk of death, according to the study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
